Significant Web Disruption Hits Many Websites and Apps

A large-scale online outage has disrupted many online platforms and mobile apps globally, with users noting problems accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.

The impacted services comprise the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-owned operations including its primary shopping website and the Ring home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected along with its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and additional accounts of difficulties using the HMRC online portal on the start of the week. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring device owners used social media to report their security devices were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, reports of issues on specific platforms totaled the thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the problem originated in the east coast of the America at AWS, a unit that provides crucial web framework for a host of companies, who lease space on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the most extensive online services platform.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the America (8am BST), officials reported “higher failure rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the east coast of the United States. The widespread consequence appeared to disrupt services worldwide, and the outage tracking website indicating issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on online failures, further indicated a surge in issues on that morning, and numerous instances situated in the Virginia area, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the issues began.
