British Foreign Office has placed 11 new countries to its official warning register about the dangers of toxic alcohol contamination from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

This revised travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Only last month, the government had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following several high-profile cases including the tragic death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or fatality within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a poisonous substance commonly employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for drinking.

Although it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Government Recommendations for Travelers

Foreign Office official the minister said that every traveler should know the signs of methanol poisoning.

"If you're drinking spirits overseas, stick to reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the official warned.

"If something appears suspicious, for example a headache that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – get medical help right away."

The full register of countries noted as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
